The cottages offer wired connections in each student room, as well as a wireless connection available for use by students in public areas of the TGA campus.
Students are provided with a top-of-the-line Dell laptop computer for use while they are students at TGA. The computers are loaded with all of the necessary science and mathematics software necessary for coursework, as well as basic office and word processing software. Please note that use of the computer is limited to the student’s time as a TGA student, and they will not be able to keep it once they graduate.
Transportation is available for TGA students. Arrangements for trips such as shopping for personal supplies will be arranged through the students’ residence hall directors.
No.
TGA’s unique academic structure allows students to travel home about every three to four weeks for a long weekend. Longer breaks in the TGA schedule are aligned with those of UT. Please see the TGA academic calendar for more detailed information.
Medical care is provided at the infirmary at Tennessee School for the Deaf, as well as by UT’s Student Health Service when needed. Students also may be transported to local hospitals if necessary.
TGA residence hall staff have basic counselor training. Students who need additional personal counseling will be referred to the professional counseling staff of the UT Counseling Center.
Faculty members and doctoral-level graduate students working with the TGA students provide in-depth academic counseling. They are familiar with the curriculum and learning skills, as well as the various post-graduation options available to students.
Yes. The experience for students in this regard is very similar to college life. Please note that each double occupancy room has its own private bathroom.
Yes. Again, this is very similar to the college experience. However, laundry machines will be free to use instead of coin-operated.
Each student has a desk, bed, dresser and chair, very similar to furniture found in a college residence hall room.
TGA does not have a uniform or a formal dress code, but students are expected to dress appropriately for the various learning experiences they encounter. For example, a day spent exploring cave drawings will require very different attire than a day spent in a chemistry lab. In all cases, the TGA staff has discretion over what may or may not be appropriate to the situation for our students' safety and well-being.
Students are welcome to bring cell phones, iPods, stereos and any other electronic equipment they may wish to have, although students are discouraged from bringing their own personal televisions. Large televisions will be available in the common areas of the cottages for all students to use.
On a case-by-case basis, arrangements may be made for students to take part in intramural high school athletics and clubs not available through TGA in partnership with a local high school in Knox County.
TGA provides all academic costs, as well as lodging and three meals a day at no charge to students. Students and their parents are responsible for other costs, including personal items, school supplies (pens, paper, etc.) and any food the student may want outside the three daily meals provided by TGA.
